Pros and Cons of Portable Generators

If you’re interested in getting a generator for peace of mind, but you’re hesitant to make the investment for a full standby generator system, you may be interested in a portable generator.  Perhaps you’ve rented one from us in an emergency and decided you’d like to have a generator on hand for next time.  Here are some things to consider when thinking about getting a portable generator.

There are many good reasons to choose a portable generator.  Obviously, they cost less, which is a big draw for many people.  They also have a smaller footprint than a standby generator and can be moved at any time.  On top of that, portable generators require little to no maintenance at all in between uses.  This makes them very easy to keep and use when they’re needed.

Portable generators do have their downsides, though.  First, there’s the fact that portable generators give off carbon monoxide while in use.  This requires specific safety precautions and limits where you can use your generator.  They also have limited power; most portable generators can’t power an entire home.  They require fuel, which means that you have to store that fuel safely, and gasoline can only be stored for a limited time before it must be replaced.

Consider the pros and cons carefully before making your decision.  A portable generator might be the best choice for your home, or you might decide that a full-size standby generator is worth your investment.
